And this is the stinky canal right behind the new and somewhat kitsch-looking Bab Jdid on the southern edge of the old town.
This canal literally took your breath away - usually bad smells can be suffered, knowing it will only be a brief experience involving a small portion of your lung surface dying - but this .. this produced a smell that was indescribably bad. And I'm reasonably competent at describing things, plus I've worked with a few vegetarians over the years.
More to the point - that's the old city in the background, it's somewhere north of 45C in the shade, so these guys with black cars are being a touch optimistic if they think some cardboard on the windscreen is going to materially affect the internal temperature of their car.
